Richard explains how he started an investment strategy at age 25
For my 25th birthday I took the day off to play golf with my dad which turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! On Hole 9, he pulled out a cheque for $25,000. He told me there were two non-negotiable conditions.
One: I could not just spend it – it had to be invested for my future.
Two: He insisted I get advice before I did anything at all.
That’s when I met Marco, who’d been Dad’s financial adviser for years. Looking back I know that meeting changed my life.
It turns out I was wasting an amazing amount of my money. Late re-payments on my car, unnecessary credit card interest and so on. I even bought my new stereo using credit arranged by the store because my cards were maxed out! If I managed my budget better, Marco showed me I could easily save up to $60 a week. He called it cash flow management and looking at it like that made a lot of sense to me.
We worked out what to do with my cheque and mapped out a longer term investment strategy. I invested my $25,000 into a growth fund, and diverted $60 a week into an investment fund.
I’m 37 and my investment portfolio has more than doubled in value. I feel really proud that I have achieved this with a bit of help and advice from Marco.
